How to download Twitter videos

The steps differ slightly between the Twitter app on a phone and the website on a computer, so both are below.

On iPhone or Android

  1. 1

Open the post in the X app

Tap the post so it opens on its own page with the video visible.

  2. 2

Tap the share icon, then Copy link

The share arrow sits under the post. Choose "Copy link" — this gives a URL ending in /status/ and a numeric id.

  3. 3

    Paste it here

Pick the bitrate you want. GIF posts appear as MP4, which is what X actually stores.

On a computer

  1. 1

    Open the post on x.com

Click the timestamp of the post so it opens as its own page rather than in the timeline.

  2. 2

    Copy the address bar URL

It should contain /status/ followed by the post id. Both x.com and twitter.com links work.

  3. 3

    Paste and choose a rendition

The available bitrates are listed highest first.

What the Twitter downloader handles

Every bitrate X encoded

Instead of whatever your connection would have been served, you pick from the full ladder X produced for that post.

GIF posts, honestly labelled

So-called GIFs download as the silent looping MP4 X actually stores. We do not fake a .gif by re-encoding it.

Audio extraction

Save just the sound from a video post as an MP3 when the audio is the part you want.

Both domains

twitter.com and x.com links resolve identically, including old bookmarked URLs.

Public posts only

Protected accounts require an approved follower, so their media is not reachable here.

No sign-in

You never connect an X account and no credentials are involved at any point.

The free Twitter video downloader that just works

X does not host GIFs. When someone uploads one it is transcoded to a silent, looping MP4 before it ever reaches a timeline, and the little "GIF" badge in the corner is a label on a video, not a file format. That is why a GIF post downloads here as an MP4: it is the file that actually exists. If you need a real .gif you will have to convert it afterwards, and you should know you are converting a video, not recovering an original.

For ordinary video posts X encodes several bitrate ladders and serves whichever suits the viewer's connection. This tool lists them so you can take the top rung rather than whatever your network would have been given.

Our Twitter video downloader (now X) saves any public tweet's video as an HD MP4, or extracts the audio as MP3. Paste the tweet link and download instantly — no X account, no app and no watermark. It even handles reposted and quoted videos.

FAQ

Twitter downloader — questions

Can I save a Twitter GIF?

Yes — Twitter GIFs are saved as MP4 video, which you can convert if needed.

Why does a GIF download as an MP4?

Because that is the only file X has. Animated GIFs are converted to silent looping MP4 at upload time, so there is no .gif on their servers to fetch. Handing you an MP4 is giving you the actual asset; converting it back to GIF would make a larger, lower-quality file out of a video.

How do I choose the video quality?

X encodes several bitrates for each video and this page lists them, highest first. The top entry is the best X produced for that upload — there is no higher-quality master to request.

Can I download a video from a protected account?

No. Protected posts are only visible to approved followers, so they are not publicly served and cannot be fetched. Only posts you can see while signed out will work.

Do old twitter.com links still work?

Yes. Links on either twitter.com or x.com resolve the same way, so bookmarks and older shared URLs do not need updating.

Can I save just the audio from a video post?

Yes, choose the MP3 option after pasting. Note that GIF posts have no audio track at all — X strips it during conversion — so there is nothing to extract from those.
